Consider the "How" When Looking for an Internship

Why did you choose SECURA for your internship?

A few close family friends had recommended I apply at SECURA. At first, I was hesitant as I was unfamiliar with the insurance industry and SECURA in particular. Upon taking a closer look at the company, I felt it would be a great fit.

What has been your biggest “AHA” moment so far?

My biggest “AHA” moment has to be me realizing the lengths SECURA goes to in order to afford the associates flexibility. I have worked in both manufacturing and retail environments, and that flexibility did not exist in those settings. The focus on the “work/life balance” is truly tremendous here.

What has been your best day on the job?

My best day on the job is when I got to see QuickStart. It was my responsibility to orchestrate a sizable portion of this associate onboarding event. Seeing it all come together and hearing how valued it is, was very rewarding.

What advice would you give to students looking for internships?

I would advise students to do their research. Really take the time to look into each company. While it’s important to ask the “What” questions (what industry is the company in, what will this position be responsible for, etc), I think it is equally important to consider “How” questions (how does work get accomplished, how do team dynamics operate, how does this culture fit with my personality, etc). Do not let a great opportunity pass you by because you are so focused on the “what” of a position that you forget to consider the “how”.
