The Finance Internship Experience

Jesse Swiechowski – Finance Intern

Hired: April 2013

Graduating from UW-Oshkosh in May 2016

Q: What have you enjoyed most about working at SECURA?

A: Every year I got more insight as to what a typical finance person does in the insurance field. Besides the basic tasks needed to keep things moving month-to-month, I got to work on projects with auditors and real life (sometimes messy) data.

Q: How would you rate your internship experience compared to those of your friends at other companies?

A: My internship experience is probably better than most because of the longevity. It takes at least 1.5 years to actually feel the "I finally know why I am doing this" feeling.

Q: How did your internship experience differ from your expectations?

A: Hearing the word "intern," I would have expected to be someone's assistant doing mundane tasks. However, after the required training, I felt like I was coming into work and contributing like every other individual.

Q: What has been the most valuable aspect of your internship?

A: Something that school can't teach is handling issues and problems you run into on a day-to-day basis and finding the right solution to those problems. Everything you encounter will not be in a nice problem statement from a textbook.

Q: What tips would you give incoming interns?

A: Don't feel overwhelmed in the beginning learning the "new system" – pretty soon you will want more work. When a problem arises, ask a co-worker to guide you to the solution, not give you the solution. Ask for more opportunities.

Q: How has your internship prepared you for a position within your career field?

A: Two of the most invaluable experiences that will transfer to any field are the ability to manage Outlook for communication and working with people that are not always my age.

Jesse feels as if SECURA helps provide students with the perfect ‘balance’ between work and school life.
