Involvement with SECURA

Kalia Lo – Administrative Assistant Intern

Hired: May 2017

Graduating from Fox Valley Technical College in May 2018

Major: Administrative Professional

Kalia recently was hired as an administrative assistant intern in the Claims Legal Department. She has since involved herself in several activities at SECURA. See how she incorporates her passion for wellness, community involvement, and learning into her role at SECURA.

Fitness classes
I heard about the fitness classes from a previous intern here. I love being active and was amazed that SECURA offers this to its associates. I am currently taking a cardio mix and a yoga class. Fitness classes are a great way to relieve stress and get away from my desk for a bit. They're also a good way to meet new people from different departments.

Fitbit Walk Across America and 30x30 Nature Challenge
I recently got involved with a few programs SECURA is running this summer. The Fitbit Walk Across America program encourages participants to get 125,000 steps each month from June to August. This motivates me to get my steps in and is an easy way to be active, so I thought, why not? The 30x30 Nature Challenge encourages participants to spend at least 30 minutes outdoors each day "unplugged" from any electronic devices aside from a fitness tracker. I love that SECURA encourages fitness and wellness; you don't see that in a lot of workplaces.

SECURA is big on community involvement and, when I heard Feed my Starving Children (an organization that packs food and sends it overseas) needed volunteers, I knew I had to help. I recently sponsored a child from the program in April and thought this was a great opportunity to take it one step further. My sisters came and volunteered as well. I also signed up to become a Foster School tutor through SECURA. Through this partnership, associates provide one-on-one mentoring to students who need extra help and attention. I want to have an impact on the lives of children and help them overcome challenges they may face. Having previously been a teacher, I have a passion for children. This allows me to still have that interaction even though I'm not in the education field anymore.

SECURA offers many workshops for associates. These are a great way for interns to learn more about the company and the community. One of the most interesting workshops for me was entitled Secret Services of HR. I've always been interested in HR and wanted to learn more. After, I talked to my supervisor about shadowing HR and other departments. It's nice to have the opportunity to see what encompasses other departments. I also attended a Big Brothers Big Sisters workshop. I used to be a Big Sister, so it was nice to sit in on the workshop.

SECURA offers a lot of opportunities to get involved, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of them. Don't be afraid to share your knowledge and ideas, and take in as much feedback as you can from your supervisor and coworkers to make the most of your internship experience.
