Major: Paralegal

Check out what led Jeff to his internship at SECURA and his experiences as an intern in the Claims Legal Department.

Before coming to SECURA, I spent 25 years with the United States Army. The first half of my time was spent doing administrative and personnel work. Later on, I transferred to working in meteorology.

I had a taste of legal when I worked in the Inspector General’s office on assignments that involved a lot of research and regulations. I enjoyed working on these assignments, which sparked my interest in the legal field. I looked into the paralegal program at Fox Valley Technical College and it seemed to be a good fit.

While attending Fox Valley Technical College, I became involved with the Free Legal Assistance Clinic for the Fox Valley. Along with other paralegal students, I assist clients with initial interviews and find out what brings clients in. Our work is somewhat of a screening process in addition to finding out what we can help with. Sometimes, clients don’t need to see an attorney, but just need help filling out legal paperwork or assistance checking over their completed paperwork before going to the courthouse.

My internship has been a great experience for my future legal career because it has been nonstop legal research. After getting my associate’s degree, I will pursue my bachelor’s degree in public administration with a minor in pre law through Upper Iowa University online. Once I graduate, my experiences from my internship will be useful in multiple settings including corporate or private practices. I’ll also have a leg up for a legal research and writing class that I am taking this fall because I can relate it to my work experience.

During my time so far at SECURA, I like the work environment the most. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful with any questions I have or assistance I need. The extra activities that are offered to associates are also a plus, and it’s refreshing to know interns can take part in them too.
